St. Matthew's and St. Joseph's Episcopal Church
Detroit, Michigan
Friday, 15 November 2019 - 7:00 PM
As part of the Art X Detroit series of the Kresge Foundation, the landmark classical-soul string ensemble CutTime Simfonica teams up with poets of the Urban Requiem Project to premiere a bold new work expressing the woes of gentrification for Detroit's invisible people. The work, called Phantom Detroit, is the creation of composer Rick Robinson and poets Claretha (Peace) Bell, Andre Johnson (aka Kevlar Afrika) and Virgil (Al) Taylor.

The work adds a jazz piano trio of Detroit's finest jazz and funk musicians; Duncan McMillan on keys, Damon Warmack on ebass and Skeeto Valdez on drums. Plus jazz violist Leslie DeShazor will improvise in the work. Video projections will also be part of the work, comparing Detroit scenes before and after the current renaissance.

Rick Robinson began composing while a bassist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. His works connect popular music elements with classical techniques; music such as jazz, soul, Latin, rock, gospel, hip-hop and more.

The first part of the program will feature previous collaborations between CutTime and Urban Requiem, plus instrumental works by Mozart, Still, Ellington and Robinson. Encouraging those who find themselves on the outside of the "New Detroit" to attend, this event is free and open to the public in the church setting. Donations are accepted.
