Rick Robinson - Pork 'n Beans at UMich Hospital
2 Oct 2018
CutTime Simfonica® brings my classic mashup of classical, funk, Latin and folklorico music to the University of Michigan Hospital's lunchtime series, Gifts of Music in 2018. I love crafting new written music that weaves the "folk music of our time" with the development, contrast and dramatic surprises that make classical music such a powerful adventure of self-reflection, empathy and sometimes catharsis.
"Pork 'n Beans" can be like a plate of spicy food, where we take a few bites of a spicy pulled pork, then a few bites of spicy Latin beans, and the heat builds into an existential crisis, like a great symphony. On the other hand, it can be like many other things too.
Celebrated Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra Concertmaster Eliot Heaton and Musique Noire violist Leslie DeShazor improvise brilliantly in the middle of our crisis. They are backed up by Daniel Winnick, Mike List, me... and the audience, who are invited to join in on toy percussion. It's TIME to CUT loose with classical!
